  • How does Allurion Balloon works?

The Allurion Program is a revolutionary technology for patients who wish to reach their ideal weight. The Allurion Balloon takes up space in the stomach. It has the same mechanism of action as other intragastric balloons to promote satiety and reduce food consumption.

  • Are there scientific evidence to support the Allurion Balloon?

Yes, there is a lot of scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness. Here are some links for medical readers or interested patients.

    • Effectiveness and Safety of the Allurion Swallowable Intragastric Balloon for Short-term Weight Loss: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Link
    • Successful Weight Loss in Adolescents with Overweight or Obesity Using a Swallowable Intragastric Balloon and Nutritional Oversight. Link
  • How much weight can I lose with Allurion Balloon?

It is estimated that weight loss will be between 10 to 20% of the total body weight. This weight loss occurs primarily during the first 3 months

  • Who is elegible for placing an Allurion Balloon?

All those who wish to lead a healthier lifestyle and meet the following criteria

    • Aged 18 and above
    • BMI 27 and above
    • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Have not had stomach or esophageal surgery
  • How is Allurion Balloon placed?

    1. You swallow a capsule containing the deflated balloon, attached to a thin tube (catheter). 99.9% of the patient are able to swallow the capsule on their own or with assistance of the doctor.
    2. A first X-ray is done to ensure the capsule is placed correctoly in your stomach.
    3. The doctor uses the catheter to fill the balloon with 550 ml of liquid.
    4. A second X-ray is done to ensure the ballon is placed and filled correclty in your stomach.
    5. The catheter is removed .
  • How is the balloon removed?

One of the most common questions our patients have is about the removal of the balloon. It has a time-activated release valve that opens and allows the balloon to deflate and pass through the digestive system after approximately 4 months in the stomach. This process does not require a surgical procedure or anesthesia for removal. Most of the time, patients are not aware when the balloon has already been expelled

  • When the balloon is expelled, am I at risk of regaining the weight?

The answer is yes. To date, there is no procedure, including bariatric surgeries, that guarantees long-term weight maintenance. With the balloon, as with any procedure, long-term maintenance will depend on each patient. However, we can mention that:

95% of patients who have the balloon maintain their weight for at least 1 year. The use of GLP-1 analog medications and the counseling provided by Obesity Health help many patients achieve long-term maintenance

  • Is there any difference with the balloons placed via endoscopy?

The difference lies precisely in the endoscopy and anesthesia required to place and remove the balloon. With the Allurion swallowable balloon, neither is needed. The weight loss is very similar for both the Allurion swallowable balloon and those placed via endoscopy.

  • Does keeping the ball longer provide me with greater weight loss?

The evidence is clear on this. Gastric balloons are a technology that helps patients lose weight during the first 3-4 months. After that time, even if the balloon remains in place longer, it has not been shown to help lose more weight

  • After the balloon is removed, can I place another one?

Yes. It is possible to have another balloon placed 4 months after the first one was inserted. However, the weight loss experienced with the second placement will not be the same as the first; it will be much less

  • Can I use weight-loss medications while I have the balloon?

Absolutely. In fact, at Obesity Health, we always recommend that all our patients start on a GLP-1 analog medication (such as Rybelsus or NuePen) 2 months after the balloon placement to further promote weight loss. At Obesity Health, we will provide you with the instructions once the two months have passed. You can purchase your medications after the ballon placement in the hospital.

  • Do I need to diet while the balloon is placed?

Yes. We prefer the term 'permanent changes in your nutritional habits.' It is essential to follow nutritional guidelines and seek that change in habits, which will be the foundation for long-term weight loss and maintenance.

  • Are there any risks?

The best advantage of this procedure is that it has practically no risks. However, one of the risks is intolerance or rejection of the balloon material, which occurs in less than 1% of patients. If this happens, the patient may experience symptoms of nausea, reflux, or vomiting for more than a week. Fortunately, in the rare case that this occurs, it can be easily corrected by removing the balloon endoscopically. In addition, rare cases of spontaneous balloon hyperinflation, small bowel obstruction, stomach dilation, esophagitis, pancreatitis, or stomach perforation have been observed worldwide, requiring surgical intervention

  • How long is the recovery time?

After the balloon placement, you can return to activities immediately, including exercising. You just need to consider the following:

    • You will be on a liquid diet for 48-72 hours.
    • It is possible that during the first 3 to 5 days, you may experience symptoms of nausea, acidity, vomiting, or general discomfort as the balloon adjusts to your body
