Why are vitamins and minerals important after bariatric/metabolic surgery?

After bariatric and/or metabolic surgery, one of your main interests should be HAVING ADEQUATE NUTRITION. To have optimal nutrition it is important that you think about 3 elements: 1) WATER, 2) MACRONUTRIENTS and 3) MICRONUTRIENTS. All of these elements are equally important for adequate nutrition, ideal weight loss and improvement in comorbidities such as diabetes. Macronutrients are carbohydrates, proteins and fats, and micronutrients are vitamins and minerals. All of these can be acquired in food, however after your surgery you will have an anatomical modification that will not allow the nutrients from food to be absorbed 100%, this happens with greater importance in gastric bypass.

Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals)

It is MANDATORY to take vitamins and minerals at least 2 years after your gastric sleeve surgery and 6 years after your bypass surgery.

Multivitamin, thiamine, cobalamin, vitamin D and calcium (in case of sleeve or bypass), 2nd week onwards: Zinc with Biotin (in case of sleeve or bypass), 2nd week onwards: Iron in case of bypass or women in menstrual age.

Macronutrients and protein requirement

Macronutrients are necessary for the proper functioning of our body. These are carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Fats and carbohydrates have reserve stores in the body, specifically in body fat and the liver. Protein, on the other hand, is reserved or stored in the muscles. In people with obesity or overweight, priority is given to proteins because it is the macroelement that must be conserved with the greatest importance. Protein helps increase metabolism, reduce glucose and cholesterol levels, improve physical appearance, reduce flaccidity and give strength and tone to muscles. It is always recommended to start eating foods with protein, such as meat, eggs, milk, beans, chickpeas, etc. However, today it is known that in addition to food, it is necessary to supplement the diet with protein powder. After bariatric surgery you MUST consume protein powder for at least 2 years after your surgery. 60 grams of protein powder are recommended during the first month per day, 30 grams from the 2nd month to the 6th month per day; and 3 to 5 times a week (30 gr) from the 7th month onwards.

Micronutrient functions (vitamins and minerals)

The micronutrients that are recommended in higher doses after surgery have specific functions:

Calcium and vitamin D: The sun is the greatest source of vitamin D and calcium is found in different products, such as fish, milk, eggs. However, after a bypass or in women over 40 years of age, supplementation with calcium and vitamin D will be required. A calcium deficiency can cause confusion, memory failure, numbness in the feet or hands, muscle spasms, itching in the hands or feet. . Vitamin deficiency can cause bone pain and weakness. In many cases these symptoms do not appear until there is a greater deficiency. The good news is that it is very easy to have good levels of vitamin D and calcium. Our recommendation is plenlife gummies 2 a day or Max D 1 capsule a day. B Complex: The B complex is made up of several vitamins which are vit. B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12. General multivitamins contain small amounts of most of the B complex; in the case of gastric sleeve, in most cases multivitamins can provide the required amount. In the case of bypass, in addition to the multivitamin, extra vitamin B will be required, especially B1 or thiamine and B12 or cobalamin. Lack of vitamin B1 or thiamine can contribute to lack of energy, fatigue, irritability, poor sleep, abdominal discomfort and nausea. A lack of vitamin B12 or cobalamin can cause anemia, nervous disorders, weakness and muscle spasms. If the lack of these vitamins is greater, it can cause more serious alterations. The good news is that it can be obtained from foods and their supplements. We recommend in bypass 1 bedoyecta capsule per day or 1 bedoyecta vial injected per month. Iron and folic acid: Iron is a mineral that is essential to prevent anemia. Its lack produces weakness, anemia, fatigue, palpitations, paleness and fragility of the nails. We recommend Tri Iron Folic in case of bypass 1 capsule per day. Folic acid can also cause less red blood cell formation and therefore anemia. Biotin Zinc: Biotin is recommended in both gastric sleeve and bypass since its deficiency can cause hair loss, fragility and decreased hair thickness. It can also cause brittle nails and sagging skin. The biotin recommendations are 2 plenlife gummies a day or 1 biotin capsule a day.
